Kettingham and Catalano duo shines as Centennial defeats Mater Dei

Despite dropping its first game of the season 38-18 to Mater Dei, Centennial did not let that intimidate, overcoming the Monarchs 27-24 in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Pac 5 Division Playoffs.

Centennial, ranked 12th in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings, boasts a 10-2 record and a high-caliber offense, only twice scoring below 40 points.  At 9-3, Mater Dei ranks 24th in the nation, known for its tough defense capable of shutting down even the best of offenses.

After leading throughout most of the first half, Centennial got itself into trouble after failing to score in the third quarter and allowing three Mater Dei touchdowns, bringing the score to 13-24 for the Monarchs.

The Huskies would not give up.  In the fourth quarter, Centennial brought everything it had, scoring 14 points and shutting out Mater Dei.  By the final whistle, the Huskies had edged out over their opponents 27-24.

The base of Centennial’s offense came from the quarterback tag team of senior Nate Ketteringham and junior Anthony Catalano.  The senior complete four of twelve passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.  Catalano completed half of his twelve passes for 181 yards, while also rushing in a score himself.

Bishop Amat is next in Centennial’s path.  The 78th ranked team in the nation just received quite the momentum boost after defeating 23rd ranked JSerra.

The two teams meet in the semifinals on November 28th at 7:30pm.
