Centennial and Mater Dei, the 2nd and 4th ranked teams in California, respectively, met up in the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division semifinals in a game that went down to the wire.

The Huskies entered the game at 13-0, ranking 3rd in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings.  Not far behind, Mater Dei boasts a 10-3 record, placing them at 20th in the country.

Mater Dei struck first with a field goal, but it was Centennial that led at the end of the first quarter with a 14-10 lead.  By halftime, the Huskies extended their lead to 28-16.  In the third quarter, Centennial added on two more touchdowns compared to Mater Dei’s one, giving them a 42-23 lead going into the final stanza.

In the fourth, Mater Dei was relentless, keeping Centennial off the scoreboard and adding on 13 points.  Unfortunately for the Monarchs, there was not enough time remaining to catch Centennial, and the Huskies walked away with a tight 42-36 victory.

The close score was mirrored by the matchup of the two starting quarterbacks.  Centennial’s Anthony Catalano completed 19-of-31 passes for 291 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.  Leading Mater Dei’s offense, freshman JT Daniels completed 20-of-40 passes for 371 yards and three TDs.  The only thing separating the two was Catalano’s running game, as the senior carried the ball16 times for 67 yards and two scores.

Coming up most often on the receiving end of Catalano’s passes were Cameron Jackson and Javon McKinley, each with five catches and a touchdown.  On the ground, J.J. Taylor carried the ball 28 times for 219 yards and a score for the Huskies.

Advancing to the finals, Centennial is set to face St. John Bosco on December 5.  This long-awaited matchup many expect to be one of the best games of the season across the country.  The Pac-5 Division is known for consistently putting out some of the nation’s top competitors and this yet two of them are set to clash in an epic matchup.
